What Is Parasite SEO? All the Right and Wrong Uses

Parasite SEO is considered an unethical strategy, but even if we do not use approaches like this fully, there are many details we can learn from them

Parasite SEO is considered an unethical strategy, but even if we do not fully use approaches like this, we can find many details in it to learn from. To describe parasite SEO briefly, it is done by getting links from sites with high authority. At this point, how well the link fits the article and how organic it is are the most important factors that determine whether the work is ethical. In a black-hat practice, unethical options may be chosen, but if search engines notice these mismatches, the penalties can be heavy.

This year was a busy one for the SEO community, and we have left behind an eventful period with many updates. In international SEO communities, one of the most talked-about topics after the Google updates was parasite SEO. Approaching all marketing work, and SEO, from a holistic point of view will usually gain us a lot. In an age when technology is advancing faster by the day, aiming for organic growth is still the smartest move in front of us. With developing technology, search engines never stop penalising, one after another, those who use practices they do not want.

How Is Parasite SEO Done?

Parasite SEO is not just backlink work. The aim is to create traffic by publishing short or full versions of an article on platforms such as Medium and Reddit. According to many views, after E-E-A-T search engines started to place more importance on profiles on external sources such as social media to establish author authority. In ethical practice there is nothing wrong with doing this for a page under our own author identity, but not everyone applies it this way. Doing this through sub-blogs and fake identities and misleading the search engine is not a good idea, but many people still use these methods.

What Not to Do With Parasite SEO

Even though it is not recommended, knowing what your competitors in the market are doing and acting accordingly is very important.

  1. Spam Content: Writing thin content that produces no value and only contains keywords. Content like this aims to manipulate ranking algorithms instead of offering users real value.
  2. Misleading Link Schemes: This tactic is a strategy in which website owners try to mislead search engines by using low-quality links unrelated to the content offered.
  3. Overusing Irrelevant Keywords: It aims to raise rankings by overusing target keywords without providing real value. This involves focusing on algorithms instead of giving users the information they want.

As you can see, what not to do is extremely simple. With a holistic SEO approach, we can easily raise our rankings without getting into tricks like these. If you like, you can read my article on SEO here.

What to Do With Parasite SEO

Parasite SEO is a well-known method that many people use while accepting its risks. It is also possible to make this method risk-free and collect its benefits organically.
At this point, we can use the following items.

  1. Strengthening Authority: Search engines are working better by the day in their search for more useful content. To write useful content, a person needs to be knowledgeable and competent. In its E-E-A-T and YMYL updates, Google focused on this most of all. Adding Twitter meta tags to your site will help here. It would also not be wrong to say that if you can bring traffic to your site from your LinkedIn and Twitter profiles, this will bring your site big benefits.
  2. Producing Useful, Competent Content: This is something everyone thinks is very easy from the outside, but it usually is not. For SEO-friendly content, calculating keyword density and being original is not enough. Search engines look more favourably on some sentence patterns, and the calculations are made by algorithms that work with the help of the thousands of patents obtained so far. The more the SEO specialist you work with knows about this, the easier it will be to raise your rankings in that direction.
  3. Organic User Links: What crowns useful content is visitors sharing it organically. Here, traffic increased by visitors will be rewarded heavily by search engines. This is also the best way to get free backlinks from more authoritative sites. You can read my article on domain authority here.

How Can We Adapt Parasite SEO to Our Strategies?

The choices we make about parasite SEO are the most important factor in setting our strategy. Here we have looked at the topic from both sides and examined the right and wrong uses. It would not be right to expect parasite SEO to be a miracle or to keep you at the top for difficult keywords. The best move in SEO will be to produce high-quality content regularly and approach SEO strategies holistically, because for search engines that constantly examine your site infrastructure, site speed, content quality, external links and hundreds of other parameters, it will not be hard to find a site doing better than you. You can follow my LinkedIn account here, where I regularly share useful content and tips.

What matters most for search engines is showing their users the most useful content in the shortest time. This both satisfies the user more and uses fewer of their resources. For search engines, users are more important than sites. Those who develop smart SEO strategies should also put users and their wants first. Today there are many concepts, such as domain authority, page authority and topical authority. Instead of trying to solve things through shortcuts, building a solid content plan and proving to search engines that the site is competent in its subject looks like the best way.

There is an important point on this topic you should keep in mind. Especially in the health and finance sectors, search engines take extra measures so that people do not suffer harm to their health or lose money. Parasite SEO, or any risky practice, is not recommended, especially for companies trying to raise their rankings in these sectors.

It is fair to say that those who have read this far deserve a tip. If you have a new site and your domain authority is low, prefer long-tail keywords when producing content in your field, and shape all your social media profiles around this field to present a professional image. Be disciplined and do not stop producing content; it takes at least a year for a domain to settle in. Until then, you should produce content through your own efforts and try to build traffic.

Once you reach a certain density of content on your site, you can try to promote yourself for a period of 3–6 months with low-cost but long-running ads. This often acts like a lifeline for your site, and if you really have high-quality content, it speeds up your rise. Meanwhile, if you apply what you learn about parasite SEO ethically, at the end of a year you will have a site that speaks to a certain audience. Your next move will be to do competitor analyses and complete the content your competitors have that you do not.
